Three hours later, the Pack House looked new. Fresh paint and windows. The benefits of having a big family. The negatives were also evident when her brothers-in-law asked about her human. Then everyone wanted to hear the story, followed by multiple offers to “check him out” or give him a “gentle warning” to treat her right.

Glad to be away from the noise and the teasing, she pulled her truck in front of the Wayward Inn. It was a bit of a dive, but Payne indicated he was writing this book on spec so needed to save money.

She slipped around the side of the building and knocked on number fifteen. Seconds later—because really how big is a hotel room?—the door opened. Payne reared back as if seeing her shocked him more than pleased him.

“Hi!”

“Whoa, hi. I wasn’t expecting…sorry.” He wiped his hand across his eyes. “I was napping and not quite awake. The knock startled me.” He opened the door. “Come in.” He stepped back then walked ahead of her into the room. He scooped some papers off the desk and shoved them in the little drawer. Payne was clearly set up for writing. His laptop and printer sat side by side. A digital recorder lay on the corner of the cheap wood desk. He straightened, scraping his hair back from his face. “What’s up?”

Okay, not the greeting one normally offered a lover. Payne shifted side-to-side, nervous.

“Uhm, I called but you didn’t answer.”

“What?” That concept appeared to shock him. He slapped his pockets looking for his phone, then dug through a jacket, finding his cell. “Battery’s dead. Let me just—” He walked into the bathroom, presumably to plug his phone in.

Bridget’s cell buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw “Mom” across the top. With all the problems around town, she was afraid not to take the call.

“Hey, Mom, what’s up?”

“Your father was wondering if you could go pick up some fresh deer meat from the salvage center. It was hit by a car. Your father thought we could have it tonight, as an extra treat on the full moon, what with all the trouble lately.”

“Sure.” She could go as soon as she finished with Payne. “I’ll head out in a few minutes.”

“Do you have their new address?”

“Can you text it to me?”

“Can I read it to you?”

“I’m going to teach you the joy of texting if it kills me,” she teased. Her mother steadfastly refused to communicate by text. Said it put too much distance between them. “Let me…”

She glanced up. The bathroom door was closed and water ran on the other side. Payne was using her phone call to take care of business. Perfect.

She pulled on the desk drawer, sure there would be the requisite notepad every hotel room contained. Several file folders slid forward. She pushed them aside, looking for empty paper. She flipped up one page and froze. Brennan’s face stared back at her, the picture attached to an old article about Brennan being a werewolf.
